Situated in the northwest portion of the country, Sonora is the second largest state in Mexico. Protected Natural Areas in Sonora
There are several areas in Sonora real estate that are PNAs (protected natural areas). This means that they have not been altered in any unnatural way to help conserve the ecosystem. These include the desert and ocean provinces of Alto Golfo y Delta, El Pinacate, La Pintada, San Jorge Bay and Tiburon Island. The Mesa del Campanero-Arroyo is a mountainous region while Cuchujaqui represents the more tropical southern portion of the state. Several tourist routes have been designated as PNAs as well, including Sierra Mar, Missions, Rio Sonora, Yecora and Sierra Alta Routes.
Native People of Sonora
Eight of the nine tribes that originally lived in the area continue to inhabit Sonora real estate. The Guarijios, Mayos and Yaquis live in the southern portion of the state. The Papagos reside in along the northern border of the state. In fact, the Papagos people had to decide which nationality they wanted to be when the US annexed part of Mexico, as the territory's border ran directly through their land. The Pimas live in the eastern side of the state and the Seris, Opatas, Cucapa and Kikapu inhabit the western section of the Sonora. Each of these tribes hand down their traditions from generation to generation in their own unique way and bring a wonderful blend of cultures to the Sonoran landscape.
Sonora's Education System
Residents of Sonora real estate have made education a high priority. Sonora's Exchange Students program offers students from other countries a chance to live the Sonoran lifestyle and learn about its rich history while allowing a Sonoran student the chance to experience a culture outside of their own that they might not have been able to see for themselves. There are also several universities operating in Sonora that offer various programs for career studies.
Transportation in Sonora
Sonora offers its US and Canadian visitors a unique pass to freely travel around the state via the "Only Sonora" program. After showing a few bits of ID (including valid driver's license, visa to Mexico, proof of residency in US or Canada and proof of ownership of vehicle), visitors will receive a decal that they place on their vehicle, allowing them to avoid the long lines and hassle of obtaining a car permit. This program was created by the Sonoran government to make it easier and more inviting for foreign visitors to come to Sonora. For those wishing to travel further into Mexico, beyond Sonora's borders, you will need to obtain a federal "Banjercito" permit.
Sonora's Traditions
Residents of Senora real estate happily celebrate their culture and heritage throughout the year in many ways. Many of the over 200 festivals commemorated in Sonora are to honor patron saints. However, these tend to be mixed in with civic ceremonies as well. Each region has its own unique way of celebrating its history. The Yaquis perform a Mazoyiwua dance to honor the beauty of the deer. Sonorans also pass down their stories and traditions from generation to generation through their arts and crafts, including pottery, baskets, masks, ceramics, figures and articles made from seashells.

The warm water temperatures allow divers and snorkelers to explore the waters off Sonora almost any time of the year in San Carlos, Rocky Point and Kino Bay.
Fishing is another favorite pastime in Sonora. The prevalence of yellowtail, snapper, whitefish, pinto bass, sailfish, marlin, yellow tuna, grouper and skijack make the waters off Sonora a fisherman's paradise. Both Rocky Point and Guaymas host three tournaments every year for fishermen to compete in.
Second only to Hawaii for US golfers, Sonora's world class golf courses bring enthusiasts from miles around. Currently, there are nine golf courses. However, many of the top golf course architects around the world are chomping at the bit to create the next best golf course here. There will surely be more golf courses coming in the future.
